Since Family Service Society’s establishment 95 years ago, our agency has remained in the “heart and soul” of Marion, Indiana – downtown.
Why We Believe Marion is Stellar
Radiant Health, then named Marion Federated Charities, was first located in a three story building where Salin Bank and Trust now stands. Our agency has made several other moves throughout our 95-year history, including a move to City Hall and another to the 3rd floor of the old Grant County YMCA on 3rd street, prior to arriving at our current location. Despite a handful of moves, our agency has never strayed from its downtown roots. While many changes have occurred in our community throughout the history of our agency, some things have remained the same.
One of the those constants is Marion’s collaborative spirit. We are incredibly grateful to be a part of a community that rallies together to accomplish great things.
During the Great Depression, our agency reports document the generosity and collaboration of our community:
Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs had a drive for clothing and collected hundreds of garments.
Ed McClure, Coal Dealer on North Branson St., has been of great assistance to the Welfare in giving great quantities of coal and milk. Each night during the severe winter weather he puts out a pile of coal for people to get. He is a kind man.
Opticians fitted glasses for a woman who lost her job at the Shoe Factory on account of not being able to thread her needle. She has been working ever since.
In our agency’s early years, shortly after World War I, we had only one employee located in a single office on Marion’s courthouse square. Today, we are honored to continue our role as a change agent in Marion, Grant and Wabash Counties, and surrounding areas. With the support of our community, we were able to serve over 10,000 individuals during 2013. Our services touch individuals from all walks of life who are in need of encouragement, empowerment, or education.
The strengths that can be found within our community greatly outweigh any so-called deficiencies. We strongly believe Marion, Indiana is a stellar place to live! And we are excited to see Marion continue to grow as a collaborative community, rich in hope and support.
