I hope all of you are having your best week yet and can see the opportunity ahead for yourselves and your families!
The Power of FIRST
Today is the first day of school at our house–first day of 5th Grade for our youngest daughter. Today is the first day to wear school clothes that were purchased in the weeks leading up to the start of school. As a kid I used to BEG my mother to let me wear my new clothes to the county fair or some other event so that I did not have to wait until school started. Today is the first day to meet new friends and reconnect with friends left behind when the school year ended. It’s the first day to make an impression on the new teacher. This year, it’s the first day to have a locker!
With so many firsts, I started thinking about the power of FIRST. Competition leads us to see FIRST as a place in line or a first place win. The romantic in us remembers our first date and our first kiss; the first time a lover tells us, “I love you.” We remember our first job, our first pet, the birth of our first child, and the list goes on.
FIRST is so much more than these limited perspectives. Every moment in time is a FIRST. We are giving birth to FIRSTs each and every day. FIRST is hope and possibility and opportunity. And we have the opportunity to GIVE a FIRST to someone in each of these moments–the first smile of the day that you give as your child, spouse, or loved one walk into the room; the first hug; the first encouraging word to a co-worker; the first random act of kindness received by someone.
There’s a lot of POWER in FIRST. This week I challenge you to consider all the ways you can GIVE a FIRST to someone—and then do it. Be the ONE in the life of a friend, family member, co-worker, or total stranger who changes the direction of their day by providing a little hope, joy, and comfort.
Have an amazing week and enjoy all the FIRSTs that come your way!
