The Importance of Green Space
A lot has been said about the importance of safe, stable and nurturing relationships. The same is true for environments. People thrive and are more likely to live non-violent lives when their environments are nurturing and safe.
That is why Hands of Hope is focusing on green spaces as one of our initiatives through the Delta Ahead grant from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
In the coming months, we will be working with community leaders to turn a blighted and neglected property in the City of Marion into a safe, stable green space for the neighborhood.
As part of this endeavor, Hands of Hope is looking for an experienced greenspace designer to assist in the transformation of this property.
A similar project transformed Barnes Park, located at 6th and E streets, was undertaken in 2017 with collaborative partnerships between the neighborhood association, City of Marion, and Hands of Hope.
The project involves modifying the physical and social environment of a neighborhood that does not currently have a park or community gathering space.
The scope of the project includes conducting listening sessions to understand community needs and preferences as well as designing and engaging an equitable and accessible gathering space based upon the residents’ needs and other features. The greenspace designer will also work with the site developers, DELTA Ahead team, residents and volunteers throughout the design and building of the green space.
Hands of Hope will integrate development strategies focused on promoting connections and deterring violence, drawing on concepts from the field of crime prevention through environmental design. Safety, security, and equitable access to the space is a top priority.
