This week our organization hosted a virtual fundraising event and our keynote speaker, Lee Prosenjak, from Simon Sinek’s organization, led us through “Start with Why”.
Start with Why
This provided us with the opportunity to think more deeply about WHY we do what we do. At Family Service Society, Ed Pereira put it best when he said, “We work because every child deserves to be guaranteed these five rights:
- To have sufficient food to eat
- A physical and emotionally safe place to live
- To have sufficient clothing to wear
- To have an opportunity to understand the value of getting an education
- To not be abused physically, sexually or emotionally
While this is Ed’s articulated “why” that drives him to be a champion for children, his why resonates throughout the entire organization and is the basis for why all of us come to work. Our passion to make a difference in the lives of children and families is palpable and that gives me hope when I’m reading reports about poverty, child maltreatment, low education achievement and the like.
I’m inspired by every parent who shares their story and lets me know they have their child back—happy and whole. I’m inspired by every teen who courageously tells their truth and realizes what happened to them is not who they are—self-esteem and self-acceptance blooms. Broken people find healing here.
If you’d like to get more in touch with your own WHY, thanks to Lee Prosenjak, you have the opportunity to do that through Simon Sinek’s organization. Putting our collective WHYs to work changes lives for good.
