If you haven’t already seen this short film addressing both child abuse and foster care, take a few minutes to watch it now. Don’t worry – I’ll wait.
Responding to ReMoved
April 29, 2014
Now that you have watched ReMoved, let’s talk about it. On any given day, there are approximately 397,000 children in out-of-home care in the U.S. Additionally, 3 million reports of child abuse are made each year in the U.S. — that’s one report every 10 seconds! I’m sure you’ve heard similar statistics before, but I hope these are more than numbers to you. These numbers represent children, and these children are our future.
So, what can you do to help prevent child abuse?
- Start Talking: Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” You can help prevent child abuse by talking about it – share resources with your friends, write a blog post, and encourage friends and family to continue the conversation.
- Be a Nurturing Parent: Being a parent is tough, and children don’t come with handbooks, but take a look at these tips on how to be a nurturing parent.
- Join a Local Council: The Grant County Prevent Child Abuse Council has been an active part of Grant County Indiana communities since 1985. Their mission is to end child abuse before it begins. The council meets at the Marion Public Library on the 2nd Thursday of each month. For more information, click here.
- Report Suspected Abuse or Neglect: Indiana law requires anyone who suspects child abuse or neglect to submit a report. Suspected cases of abuse or neglect should be reported to Child Welfare Services (CWS). Reports can be made anonymously through a 24/7 hotline by calling 1-800-800-5556.
