Good morning! Another GREAT Monday is here to greet us.
Meet Me Where I Am
During church yesterday the sermon was centered around the story of the ten lepers. More interesting to me, though, was the old testament reference—Leviticus—where the rules for lepers are laid out. Lepers were to only wear torn clothing, their hair was to remain disheveled, and when anyone without the disease came near they were to call out the words, “unclean, unclean!” As a society, it seems to me we do this with those in poverty. We make them shout out—“I’m poor, I’m poor”—to prove that they qualify for HIP or for food assistance. We separate them in our community in unfit housing and reduce our expectations of their ability to achieve.
I began thinking about how this impacts our clients and some of the situations and circumstances surrounding their need to come into our services. It’s easy for us to make judgments and in many ways relegate them to the same status as the lepers. We make assumptions that we KNOW how to “fix” them. In truth, the best we can do is meet them where they are and walk beside them as they seek their own will for change.
We’re all products of our experience. Each of us needs someone who will meet us where we are and join us in the journey—without judgement or preconceived ideas of what is the right path. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to all who seek our services. And thank you for meeting me where I am as I continue to learn and grow in the leadership of Radiant Health.
