This year I chose 10 books I wanted to read over this year. The one I’m reading now is The Magic of Thinking Big by Dr. David J. Schwartz. This book was written in 1959 …
Look at things as they CAN be
“Look at things not as they are, but as they can be. Visualization adds value to everything. A big thinker always visualizes what can be done in the future. He isn’t stuck with the present.”
Read it again. Sit with it for a bit.
How could we apply this to our clients? Or our community? Here’s the thing—we have the great privilege to cast a new vision for the lives of our clients and free them from the lies they have been told about themselves. We get to help them paint a new picture of their future. That future may be free from the bondage of an unhealthy relationship. Or freedom from the feelings of worthlessness that come at the hands of abuse or neglect. We have the opportunity to ADD VALUE each time we interact with them.
The same is true for our own lives. If we run around talking about the challenges of our present—my car’s a heap, my house is a mess, I’m struggling paycheck to paycheck—we’d remain discouraged. We have to envision a different future…one where our relationships are rewarding and there is an abundance of resources at our disposal. Dr. Schwartz writes, “It isn’t what one has that’s important. Rather, it’s how much one is planning to get that counts. The price tag the world puts on us is just about identical to the one we put on ourselves.”
It’s easier to be content in our circumstances when we have an understanding that it’s temporary and a vision for what will be.
Take some time to THINK BIG this week. Cast a vision for your future. Shine a light on the future for someone else.
