As I was thinking about my message today, I was honestly bouncing between the Rodney Atkins song:
Just Keep Going
“If You’re Going Through Hell” and the Billy Ocean song “When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going.” (Clearly I’m walking generational lines here.) Both songs are reflective of my inspired mood today. There are times in life when adversity seems to knock at your door more often than advantages. The key is always recognize that adversity is temporary. Regardless of the season of your life, a new season is always nearby and opportunity is abundant—you just have to keep going.
Part of our unique responsibility in this life is to recognize that our circumstances are temporary and by instilling a vision of hope, encourage ourselves and others to just keep going. While hope is not a strategy, it is a foundational building block for resilience and ultimately living a rich life.
People who exhibit the competence of resilience know how to cope in spite of setbacks, barriers or limited resources. They are willing and able to overcome obstacles to get what they want. You’ll find they bounce back from disappointments, are flexible and adaptable. And they view failures as isolated and short term.
If your self-talk is negative and self-defeating—it’s time for you to build your resilience.
This week while you are out and about, reflect on the moments in your life that have required you to dig deep into your reserves of hope in order to come through a difficult time. What were some of the things that worked better than others to help you make progress toward a more positive season in life? And how might you coach those powerful ideas into yourself and those around so that they too may develop the skills of resilience and ultimately a life of abundance and joy? You’ve got this. Just keep going.
