As I was driving to work the other day, I witnessed something that broke my heart.
Hey You, with the Smartphone. . .
A young boy, probably 5 or 6 years old, was riding a bicycle with his dad following behind on foot. The boy races ahead, peddling as fast as he can while showcasing his ability to swerve back and forth across the sidewalk. After displaying his awesome skills, the boy looked back toward his father with a huge grin, but the dad didn’t notice. The boy’s smile faded as he realized his dad’s eyes were focused on his cell phone.
I wish I would have pulled my car over, given the boy a giant high five and told him that I saw his cool tricks. But would this have met his desire to be seen, heard and loved by his father?
Technology use is on the rise. In fact, 5 out of 10 American adults now own a Smartphone, according to PewResearch. Technology can transform lives – for the better, or the worse. As a Smartphone owner myself, I want to remind you that our lives are best lived beyond the 3.5 inch screen.
This summer, I challenge you to put down your cell phone and live intentionally. If you need some motivation, check out this sobering video:
