Ever since I decided I wanted to pursue a career in Social Work, people have responded with more negative comments rather than encouraging ones.
Confessions of a Social Work Student
It was not that they did not think it was a good fit for me, but they had fallen into the lies of Social Workers being baby snatchers, that they do not make any money, and the burnout rate is high. Of course as a young eighteen year old these comments were not supportive or empowering to me. Therefore, I had to change my mindset to who I wanted to be as a Social Worker and what I was going to stand for in this career
. . . I am ultimately planting a seed that will hopefully grow into changing a person’s behavior or circumstance.
Through my senior Social Work Placement at Family Service Society, I am developing the skills I will need to be an effective Social Worker. Through observation, facilitation, and reflection I am learning how I would handle different clients and situations that arise on a daily basis. I am learning how to be empathetic with the clients I am interacting with, and recognizing I am ultimately planting a seed that will hopefully grow into changing a person’s behavior or circumstance. My role is to empower and encourage individuals to see the potential they have and support them when there may be no one else cheering for them in their corner.
