Big, Bold, Beautiful Life
As I write this morning, the sun is coming up over the horizon. It’s orange yellow hue casting a beautiful glow across my yard. My dogs’ noses are deep in the grass searching for clues to the mystery of what wildlife passed through overnight. Birds are back and forth at the feeders chirping to one another and warning their feathered friends of our presence. An emerald-colored hummingbird just buzzed by on its way to devour the morning dew and nectar from the bright red canna blooms. My coffee is wafting its steamy smoke to remind me how cool is the morning. I feel content and full.
Growing up, my mom always said to me, “happiness is a decision.” And she is absolutely right. What I’ve learned by extension is that living life fully is a decision as well. I recently overheard a conversation in a grocery store between two people who appeared to be really good friends. The content of their communication does not matter but the summation did. One said, “That would never happen for me.” The other quickly agreed in relation to themselves. In this moment of doubt, this person told themselves, “This is not possible for me; I’m not worthy; it’s not worth pursuing.” They had decided not to live fully.
Living fully happens in the little moments as well as the big moments. I’ve done some wild things in my life that made me feel crazy alive flying in a Black Hawk helicopter to put out forest fires in Nebraska; driving long horn cattle across the northern part of Nebraska on horseback; comforting AIDS patients in Cuba; visiting countries around the world for both work and play; climbing mountains. I could write a long list. And while these experiences were amazing, they are a very narrow slice of my full life.
My full life is cradled in the in between. It’s found in the laughter with co-workers, family and friends. It’s found in the quiet moments here with my dogs. It’s found in the loving relationships that surround me.
