After multiple months away from home and quarantined while my son recovers from a transplant, I’m finally home.
Beauty and Abundance
Already my days are filled with comforting routine. A wet and insistent dog nose pokes my hand or arm hoping for an early morning pet followed by a more urgent dog nose poke that means, “Hey! Get up! Let’s go outside!” I dress in some discombobulated ensemble that I’m sure makes the neighbors wonder if I’m color blind and stumble downstairs to let the dogs out for their morning walk about. Feeding happens promptly at 6:30 a.m. As the dogs lap up their breakfast, I grind coffee beans and prep the coffee maker to do its magic so when I return from our walk, it’s ready and waiting for me like a welcoming friend. Then we leash up and head out the door.
This morning we encountered our neighborhood gaggle of geese crossing the road in what felt like slow motion as the dogs became more and more interested in these feathered friends. We saw an abundance of bunnies of all ages and stages as well as colorful birds—yellow finches and a few bluebirds. One small dappled fawn straggled behind its mother who seemed unconcerned about our presence which is likely familiar to her. The soft morning haze was hanging over the soybean fields like a sheer veil covering a bride’s face and waiting to be lifted, in this case, by the sun.
The morning is perfect and I feel joyfully overwhelmed by a feeling of gratitude that resonates throughout my entire body. For all the challenges—there is truly more good in the world and life is filled with beauty and abundance.
