I was listening to a podcast while walking my dogs on a cool morning in the country and something the guest said stopped me in my tracks and I felt it was worth sharing.
A Game You Can Win
“Compare yourself to who you were yesterday and not to the other people in your life today. That’s a game you can win.”
I spent the rest of my walk thinking about how often I get side tracked comparing myself to others in everything from retirement savings, to vacations, to career achievement. This quote helped me to reframe the story I was telling myself—which essentially boils down to I’m not enough—and gave me a reason to celebrate as I recognized the positive trajectory of my life overall and the incremental progress over time.
It’s easy to get caught up in outside comparisons, especially with social media—you see the highlight reel of people’s lives as opposed to the difficulties which are experienced by everyone regardless of age, color, creed, socio-economic status or circumstance. You may start to feel your home, your marriage, your life, YOU are not good enough. It’s just not true.
Take a moment to inventory the many great things in your life that are better today than they were yesterday and even a month ago. Even during this pandemic, it’s likely there are relationships or other things that are improving and advancing you and your dreams. Revel in the small things. Celebrate the journey that is uniquely yours in this lifetime at this time in space and know you are enough. THAT is a game YOU can win.
